Hiab produces milestone truck mounted forklift

Comments Off on Hiab produces milestone truck mounted forklift

Hiab, part of Cargotec, has produced truck mounted forklift unit number 100,000 at the production supply centre in Dundalk, Ireland.

Designed to be carried on the rear of most trucks and trailers, truck mounted forklifts can be dismounted and ready to deliver loads in under 60 seconds. The Dutch company Kooi created the first truck mounted forklift in 1967 while MOFFETT created its first truck-mounted forklift in 1986. In 2004, Kooi was incorporated into MOFFETT, then a part of Hiab.

Today, Hiab produces truck mounted forklifts under two brands, MOFFETT which is available in 40 countries and PRINCETON which supplements Hiab’s offering in the US. In 2021, the assembly of both brands was expanded to the US, in Streetsboro, Ohio.

“Hiab is the world’s leading provider of truck mounted forklifts with over 25,000 units sold in the last five years. A big thank you to customers, all partners and employees who make this possible,” says Jon Lopez, Senior Vice President, Truck Mounted Forklifts, Hiab.

Jann Hansen, Vice President, Sales & Product Management, Truck Mounted Forklifts, Hiab, adds: “Our truck mounted forklifts are being used to keep everyday life moving in over 40 countries around the globe. There is a truck mounted forklift for almost any application with our line-up of more than 30 different models, ranging from 1.5 to 3.5 tonnes.”

As the first manufacturer, Hiab has introduced a complete all-electric lineup of emission free models matching the diesel versions. Electric charging contributes to a lower total cost of ownership for electric units combined with reduced service costs as they are engineered with fewer moving parts.

“We have made significant investments in R&D as we develop our portfolio, in particular, our MOFFETT eSeries of all-electric models. Our focus is on safety, sustainability, productivity and lowering the total cost of ownership. In the future, new models will benefit from improvements to our advanced control systems and connected services,” says Kevin Turnbull, R&D Director, Truck Mounted Forklifts.

All truck mounted forklifts models can navigate tight spaces and drive on uneven and soiled surfaces. This makes them ideal to distribute building supplies, beverages and gas canisters. Not limited to traditional logistical operations, their versatility means that truck mounted forklifts are used for defence and poultry farming operations and everything in between.

UNIATLANTICO becomes new majority shareholder in Maritime division of EMS

Comments Off on UNIATLANTICO becomes new majority shareholder in Maritime division of EMS

The renowned Hamburg-based shipping company UNIATLANTICO strengthens its position in the maritime sector by acquiring a majority stake in the shipping companies EMS Chartering, Fehn Ship Management, and Northwest Competence of the German Ems-Fehn-Group (Leer).

The companies provide services in shipping & chartering, ship management, and crewing and will now pursue a common growth path with UNIATLANTICO.

The combined shortsea shipping & chartering operations will be based in Leer and operate under the well-established branding of EMS Chartering. For this, the EMS Chartering team will merge with the shortsea specialists of UNIATLANTICO into one unit and jointly market the combined coaster fleets of both partners. The joint unit will also have offices and teams in Hamburg and Bremen.

“We are very pleased to have this expanded team of seasoned and acclaimed shipping professionals on board, who have enjoyed a high reputation in the market for decades,” says Andreas Bergmann, CEO and founding partner of UNIATLANTICO. Heiko Luikenga, main shareholder of EMS-Fehn-Group, adds: “Our shipping experts are known for their customer-oriented solutions. Together, they will be able to achieve even more for our clients.” EMS-Fehn-Group consists of two divisions, Maritime and Logistics. The structure of the Logistics division remains unchanged.

The EMS Chartering team will be led by Managing Director Agnieszka Acar, who has been at the helm since July 2023. “I am very much looking forward to working with my old and new colleagues to further improve our services and to continue developing individual solutions that precisely meet our customers’ requirements,” says Acar. “Combining the coaster fleets further enhances our flexibility and helps us leverage our collective expertise and resources.”

EMS Chartering’s fleet will now consist of nine modern and economic general cargo coaster vessels, ranging in size from 2,600 to 5,000 DWAT and ideal for safely transporting bulk, breakbulk, and project cargo. A number of these ships can reach river ports and seaports with limited access due to tides.

Fehn Ship Management, responsible for the technical management of owned and third-party vessels, and the manning agency Northwest Competence, including its Riga-based offshoot Baltic Transocean Shipping & Crewing, will also be part of the strategic acquisition by UNIATLANTICO, expanding its footprint in all aspects of a diversified and fully integrated shipping enterprise.

„We became ship owners in 2016 when we acquired our first fully-owned vessel, but so far we have mainly been focusing on a strong commercial operation,“ explains Bergmann. Since 2016, the UNIATLANTICO fleet has grown steadily. „However, the idea of building up in-house competence in all aspects of commercial, technical, and crew management is only now becoming reality with the acquisition of shares in EMS-Fehn-Group’s Maritime division.“

Rhenus organises transport of Ukrainian cereals

Comments Off on Rhenus organises transport of Ukrainian cereals

Rhenus Port Logistics Rhein-Ruhr is now providing a weatherproof port terminal and special loading equipment for grain shipments from Ukraine at Terminal 4 of the Port of Duisburg.

The maize was previously transported to its destinations via the Ukrainian port city of Odessa. The rail transport through Ukraine, Poland and Germany replaces this previous route. On arrival in Duisburg, the maize is transferred directly from the containers into inland waterway vessels. By closely coordinating the arrivals of rail and shipping services, it is possible to ensure that the sensitive cargo is quickly transported to its next destination.

Duisburg as a new hub: Rhenus Port Logistics organises handling operations to transport Ukrainian cerealsDuisburg as a new hub: Rhenus Port Logistics organises handling operations to transport Ukrainian cereals
Rhenus Port Logistics is an expert in handling general cargo and containers and has a business presence at numerous German ports with its own terminals or offices or it is represented by long-standing partners. This is also the case in the Port of Duisburg by means of the Rhein-Ruhr Terminal. It not only provides sufficient warehouse capacity and special handling services, but also has outstanding multimodal connections with all modes of transport. Other parties involved in transporting the maize from Ukraine are the long-standing Rhenus partner and container logistics specialist Contargo and Rhenus LBH PartnerShip. The latter handles the ongoing transportation by inland waterway vessel. The rail services from Ukraine to Duisburg via Poland are handled by various rail service companies and finally by “duisport rail GmbH.”

Reloading the entire freight on several occasions is just one of numerous challenges along the itinerary. At the Ukrainian border town of Mostyska, the freight is transferred from cereal bunker wagons to standard EU bulk containers. At the Polish/Ukrainian border, the consignments are provided with special GPS tracking seals, for example, and these are then removed at the German/Polish frontier. Partners Rhenus and Contargo analysed the entire supply chain for four months before launching the first transport operations. In addition to having GMP+ certification to safely transport the animal feed, it has been necessary to coordinate all the customs procedures and arrivals of rail services and inland waterway vessels to provide punctual handling.

“It has not only been essential to consider the current cereals market, but also the political circumstances in Ukraine and the transit and import restrictions for cereals in Europe when setting up the project; and repeated checks on the transport operations have been required to see whether they are feasible and cost-effective”, explains Michael Petersmann, Managing Director of Rhenus Port Logistics Rhein-Ruhr. As many as four block trains currently arrive at the Port of Duisburg every month. “We’d be delighted to be able to continue the handling services in Duisburg in the long term as an alternative to the previous route via Odessa. Expanding the transport services to include other cereal products such as wheat, rapeseed, sugar beet pellets and soya beans would be completely realistic,” says Marcin Czachorowski, the Managing Director and Project Manager at Contargo Intermodal Poland.

The partner-like cooperation between those involved at duisport rail GmbH and Rhenus Port Logistics Duisburg guarantees that the tipping device at the handling facility supplies the feed from the cereal trains and discharges it directly into the inland waterway vessels on time. The communications between the scheduling departments at duisport rail and at Rhenus Ports Duisburg are particularly important in this process to ensure that just-in-time handling services are provided for the block trains.

Sarens completes project in Port Arthur

Comments Off on Sarens completes project in Port Arthur

Sarens completed the Kiln Changeout project at the Golden Triangle site in Port Arthur, Texas, undertaken for the replacement of a large industrial kiln.

Sarens, renowned globally for its expertise in heavy lifting and engineered transport, successfully completed the Kiln Changeout project at the Golden Triangle site in Port Arthur, Texas. This project, undertaken for the replacement of a large industrial kiln, highlights Sarens’ commitment to precision, safety, and efficiency in complex lifting operations.

The primary objective of this project was to remove the old kiln and install a new one, ensuring continued operations and improved efficiency at the facility. The new kiln, measuring 91 feet in length and 6 feet in diameter, and weighing 122,000 pounds, was essential for the client’s operational upgrade. The entire process was meticulously planned and executed to minimise downtime and disruption.

Sarens was selected for this project due to its competitive pricing and proven track record with the client. The project required careful planning and execution in an extremely tight area, with safety being the top priority. Specific site training was conducted to ensure all team members were prepared for the unique challenges of the project location.

The project commenced on May 26, 2024, and concluded successfully on May 31, 2024. Utilising the LTM 1400 crane, configured with 264,600 pounds of counterweight, Sarens was able to lift and place the new kiln with precision. The crane, chosen for its optimal lift capacity, performed exceptionally well, with its smooth motion being a key factor in the project’s success. Charlie Morris, Project Manager at Sarens, remarked, “The Kiln Changeout project was a great success due to our meticulous planning and the excellent performance of our team and equipment. We’re proud to have completed this project efficiently and safely, meeting all the client’s expectations.”

The logistical aspect of the project was handled with utmost efficiency. The crane was transported to the site and assembled the day before the lift. Despite the confined space, the crane setup was completed without any significant issues. The old kiln was cut into two pieces for easier removal, while the new kiln was installed in a single pick. This strategic approach minimised the complexity of the operation.

Over the course of the project, a crew of five Sarens team members ensured that the lifts were executed safely and efficiently. The weather conditions were favourable, further contributing to the smooth progress of the project.

The Kiln Changeout project not only highlights Sarens’ capability to handle complex industrial projects but also shows the company’s dedication to delivering high-quality results under challenging conditions. The successful completion of this project is a testament to the skill and commitment of the Sarens team, as well as the advanced capabilities of their equipment.

Safar takes delivery of Tadano all terrain crane

Comments Off on Safar takes delivery of Tadano all terrain crane

Ask Safar Managing Director Hendrik Eich, and he will tell you that the Tadano AC 5.220-1 is capable of tackling an extremely broad range of jobs: “Without any counterweight, it’s a remarkably cost-effective 100-tonne crane that can get to its destination without needing any additional transportation vehicles.”

“With 11 tonnes of counterweight, it’s a versatile 130-tonne machine. With the full counterweight, it can even be used as a 250-tonne powerhouse,” he says while explaining just how versatile the crane is. And since Safar’s Cranes department continues to be on a clear growth trajectory and the market keeps demanding increasingly powerful machines, he sees the AC 5.220-1 as the best machine for expanding the range of jobs that his company can cover, as he underscored when picking up the crane from Tadano Head of Sales Frank Brachtendorf.

Hendrik Eich adds another reason why his company decided on the AC 5.220-1: “We’ve had an extraordinarily good business relationship with Tadano for many years now, and are extremely happy with the service they provide – that goes from technical support all the way to operator training and other training offerings provided by Tadano, including BKF 35 training.” On top of this, the Safar team knows how invaluable the long-term quality of Tadano cranes is: “We’ve had an ATF 100G-4 hard at work since 2019, and its total downtime is pretty close to zero, part of which we attribute to the fact that Tadano’s service and spare parts services are incredibly reliable,” Hendrik Eich points out.

Safar ordered the AC 5.220-1 with a heavy-duty short jib and a second winch, which will eliminate the need for a second crane in many cases where loads are being turned. As far as Hendrik Eich is concerned, this solution with a runner and a second winch is one of the crucial advantages offered by the crane. He also adds the unit’s adjustable-extension outriggers with five positions, the large lifting capacities, and a boom length of 68 meters as additional plus factors. And when it comes to aspects related to cost-effectiveness, the fact that the crane can travel below the 12-tonne axle load limit with a hook block, dimensional lumber, and various accessories is something he finds tremendously compelling: “This makes the AC 5.220-1 the only large five-axle crane that can be used right away without the need for additional transportation vehicles,” he succinctly puts it.

Marr awarded PKSW contract

Comments Off on Marr awarded PKSW contract

Marr Contracting (Marr) has been awarded the contract to provide heavy lifting services on the BlueScope No. 6 Blast Furnace (6BF) Reline Project at the Port Kembla Steelworks (PKSW).

In August 2023, BlueScope announced approval of its plans to reline and upgrade the previously dormant blast furnace in order to secure the Illawarra region’s steelmaking capacity beyond 2026 when the existing No. 5 blast furnace (5BF) completes its current production campaign.

One of only two major steelmaking plants in Australia, PKSW employs approximately 3,500 people and indirectly supports an additional 5,500 jobs in the Illawarra. The AU$1.15 billion project will include the furnace reline, repair and upgrade of ancillary plant equipment and AU$100 million of environmental improvement upgrades that will enable the plant to maintain production while at the same time investing in lower emissions steelmaking technologies as they emerge to ensure the future economic benefits of steelmaking for Australia.

As an alternative to using a 600-tonne crawler crane, the single-crane solution adopted – using one of Marr’s 330-tonne capacity M2480Ds installed on a specifically-design 7.5 x 7.5m piled foundation – provides the heavy lifting capacity required with the additional benefits of a small footprint and long reach across the project.

With minimising disruption to production at PKSW by ensuring that 6BF is available for operation prior to the end of 5BF’s campaign a priority, Marr’s solution also helps to mitigate risk to critical path by providing the project with an instant cranage solution for unscheduled lifting and emergent work during the relining process.

“Occassionally, we come across a project where the perfect solution immediately presents itself like a hand in a glove. This has been one of those projects and by working closely with the BlueScope team early in the planning stages, it has been possible to develop a simple solution that will reduce complexity and help to secure the tight construction program,” said Marr’s Managing Director, Simon Marr.

According to PKSW Project Director, Justin Reed, “The capability and capacity of Marr’s tower crane is a true game-changer for our project. At vertical industrial sites like a Blast Furnace we have always wished there was a ‘sky-hook’ that could deliver a lift at any point on the plant, and now we have a solution with significant lifting capacity. Marr’s team are challenging our traditional thinking by enabling large sections of equipment that were previously maintained in situ to be lifted to ground for repairs or replacement.”

BlueScope anticipates that the 6BF will be recommissioned in mid-2026.
