CEVA launches FORPLANET

0

Companies around the world continue to fight against climate change by addressing the environmental impact of their supply chain, and many have set both near- and long-term decarbonization and sustainability commitments.

CEVA Logistics is taking the next step in its journey to net zero and in support of its customers around the globe. The company announced a new sub-brand today to unify and further develop its sustainable logistics solutions—CEVA FORPLANET.

The new suite of CEVA FORPLANET logistics solutions enables customers to reduce the environmental impact of their supply chains by leveraging a range of low carbon transport and circular economy solutions. In addition, with many customers needing to accurately communicate about their activities, CEVA FORPLANET solutions provide precise data and CO2e calculations to ensure proper reporting.

As part of the CMA CGM Group, CEVA Logistics is committed to reaching net zero by 2050. In the near-term, CEVA is committed to reducing its emissions through three main levers—its warehouses, its fleet operations and its low carbon solutions offered with carrier partners. The CEVA FORPLANET solutions will address the vast majority of CEVA’s emissions, as scope 3 emissions account for 95 percent of the company’s 2023 level.

CEVA’s corporate social responsibility efforts were recognized recently with the company receiving a gold medal with its annual EcoVadis score. The recognition placed CEVA in the top 1 percent of logistics and transport companies, and the top 5 percent of companies overall.

As the new suite for its sustainable logistics offering, CEVA FORPLANET includes solutions around measuring, optimizing and shifting to low carbon transport. The solutions include modal shift, as well as alternative fuels for air, ocean and ground transport.

So far in 2024, CEVA has avoided more than 26,000 tons of emissions thanks to more than 10 million liters of sustainable maritime and aviation fuel. In addition, CEVA currently has more than 1,000 electric and low carbon fuel vehicles operating across its ground operations and proposes rail and barge solutions as other modal shift solutions. One block train is the equivalent of taking 25 trucks off of the road, reducing road congestion and emissions (up to 90 percent). The company also has new solutions and pilot programs in development, including wind propulsion.

CEVA also offers customers a consulting approach, for those interested in a deeper partnership to transform their supply chains using the suite of CEVA FORPLANET solutions through a five-step transformation program. Customers seeking more details or wanting to assess their shipments independently can use various tools provided by CEVA, including eco-calculators accessible on its website and within the MyCEVA digital platform.

CEVA Logistics is also actively promoting circular economies across various industries, including automotive, consumer & retail, healthcare, technology, and industrial sectors. CEVA collaborates with customers and other industry partners to develop closed-loop supply chains, reverse logistics processes and product take-back programs (including repair, refurbishment and resale) to promote more efficient resource management with supply chains. As an example, CEVA is a partner in various pilot programs underway in the automotive sector dealing with tires and with electric vehicle batteries.

CEVA’s FORPLANET packaging replaces single-use options with reusable packaging and consumables within supply chains. Using its web and mobile application, CEVA can manage customers’ entire stock of transport and logistics packaging through the various stages of use, reverse logistics and end-of-life recycling. Solutions range from pallet covers to isothermal kits to circular boxes. In the first half of 2024, CEVA’s reusable packaging solution saved more than 10,000 kilograms of plastic from being used.

Mathieu Friedberg, CEO, CEVA Logistics, said: “With the world around changing, action is required. As one of our core CSR pillars, ‘Acting for Planet’ isn’t just an empty phrase, but a guiding principle that must affect everything—down to the solutions we offer. With the launch of this new CEVA FORPLANET sub-brand for our suite of solutions, we’re committing ourselves to both promote current decarbonization efforts and develop better ways of sustainably supporting our customers’ supply chains in the future.”

Mammoet supports Bruce Power in Canada

0

Mammoet is supporting one of the largest nuclear power plants in the world, Bruce Power, through its Major Component Replacement projects in Ontario, Canada.

The MCR projects began in January 2020 to replace major components within six reactor units (Units 3-8) across two stations, Bruce A and B. During regular operation these stations power more than 30 per cent of the province and produce cancer-fighting medical isotopes.

These significant refurbishment projects form part of a larger Life-Extension program which began in 2016 to extend the site’s life to 2064. Being Ontario’s largest private sector clean-energy initiative, the Life-Extension program will provide clean, sustainable and reliable energy to contribute to Canada’s climate targets.

Working with the Steam Generator Replacement Team, comprising of Aecon, United Engineers & Constructors and Framatome, Mammoet is supporting the removal and installation of 90 tonne steam generators.

To access and replace 16 of Bruce A’s steam generators, SGRT must first lift and temporarily store 300-tonne steam drums. Mammoet’s PTC-35 ring crane – one of the world’s highest capacity land-based cranes – is on site to undertake all of this work.

Other specialist Mammoet equipment will continue to be in use for on-site movements and replacement of heat exchangers, electrical equipment, and transformers.

Following completion of the first MCR project of Unit 6 in Bruce B, work began on Unit 3 at Bruce A. The Unit 4 refurbishment at Bruce A begins in February and the remaining three units will follow.

Kyle Hannah, Account Manager at Mammoet, said: “We are delighted to be contributing to this important refurbishment project for Bruce Power, and to build on a relationship stretching back to the early nineties.

As the world’s largest engineered heavy lifting and transport company, we are well-placed to ensure that one of the world’s largest nuclear extension programs proceeds smoothly, and – most importantly – safely.

With its huge outreach, the PTC35 is the ideal tool to reach deep into existing facilities such as this, allowing all installations to take place without relocating lifting equipment and affecting the project schedule.”

Rob Hoare, Vice President, MCR Execution, Bruce Power, added: “We have worked with Mammoet for many years. They have a great understanding of the way we work, our facility and the high levels of safety and execution needed for the maintenance of nuclear power plants.

They provide the right people and equipment at the time we need them to complete projects safely and efficiently.”

Norsepower and IINO completed installation

0

Wind propulsion leader Norsepower and esteemed shipping company IINO Kaiun Kaisha, Ltd. (IINO LINES) have completed the installation of two Norsepower Rotor Sails™ (NPRS) on the Oceanus Aurora, a Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC) chartered by Borealis, a leading provider of advanced and sustainable polyolefins solutions.

In Europe, Borealis is also an innovative leader in polyolefins recycling and a major producer of base chemicals.

The VLGC Oceanus Aurora has been outfitted with two custom designed NPRS™. These units, measuring 20m tall and 4m in diameter, have been tailored to meet the vessel’s precise air draught limits.

The Norsepower Rotor Sail™ is a modernized version of the Flettner rotor. Utilizing a small amount of electricity to spin cylindrical sails on the deck, the NPRS harnesses wind and the Magnus effect to generate powerful thrust. This innovative product bolsters the main propulsion, resulting in reduced fuel consumption, emissions, and fuel costs.

Oceanus Aurora sails between Houston, USA and Stenungsund, Sweden or Porvoo, Finland. Norsepower calculates that the NPRS will reduce the vessel’s fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions by approximately 4%, aligning with international emissions reduction targets, including the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII), and mitigating rising fuel costs.

“Minimizing the environmental footprint of our transportation activities is vital to our Energy & Climate strategy” said Thomas Van De Velde, Borealis Senior Vice President Base Chemicals and Energy. “The innovative Norsepower Rotor Sails™ on the Oceanus Aurora vessel will help us achieve our ambitious emission reduction targets and thus support the transformation towards more environmentally sustainable transportation.”

Seiichi Fujimura, Director, Executive Officer of IINO Lines, remarked: “Investing in sustainable vessels is paramount to our commitment to environmental stewardship. Partnering with Norsepower and Borealis allows us to integrate promising technologies into our operations, bolstering our efforts towards decarbonization.”

Heikki Pöntynen, CEO of Norsepower, emphasized: “Our most recent installations underscore the shipping industry’s proactive approach to sustainability. The solid real-life performance data from our 27 NPRS™ units in operation demonstrates tangible reductions in both fuel costs and emissions. With this third delivery and installation contract for a gas carrier, we are honoured to support IINO Lines and Borealis in their pursuit of environmental and commercial excellence.”

The Oceanus Aurora, a dual fuel LPG ship, was delivered in March 2023 from Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Ltd in Korea (today, Hanwha Ocean Co., Ltd.), with the foundations for the Norsepower Rotor Sails™ already in place. The installation of the units took place in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, at the beginning of November 2024.

Hershey repurchases factory outside Ottawa

0

Last fall, Hershey Co. repurchased a factory outside Ottawa that it closed more than a decade earlier.

Blommer Chocolate Co., a US rival, is expanding in Ontario while it shutters an 85-year-old Chicago plant. Oreo-maker Mondelez International Inc. says it has invested $250 million in Ontario manufacturing facilities just in the last few years.

Although Canada is far too cold to grow enough sugar for its candy industry, it has managed to attract hundreds of millions of dollars of investment in recent years to expand capacity. Some of that can be attributed to a rising population, but many in the industry say it’s the long-standing protectionist measures in place south of the border that are sweetening Canada’s appeal.

Bertling celebrates Movember

0

International Men’s Day 2024 is a global observance that celebrates the positive contributions and achievements of men while addressing important issues affecting men’s health and well-being.

This day provides an opportunity to promote discussions and actions that support men’s physical and mental health and encourage positive role models and gender equality for a more inclusive society.

In tandem with International Men’s Day, Movember takes center stage throughout November. Movember is a global movement that originated in Australia, encouraging men to grow mustaches during November to raise awareness and funds for men’s health issues, particularly prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, and suicide prevention.

Both Movember and International Men’s Day share common goals of promoting men’s health and challenging societal norms surrounding masculinity. By participating in these events you can show you support the well-being of men and boys in various ways. Here are some ways to get involved: Promote Men’s Health: Encourage men to prioritize their physical and mental health by seeking medical advice and support when needed; Advocate for Gender Equality: Challenge harmful stereotypes and behaviors that affect both men and women, promoting an inclusive society; Support Positive Masculinity: Celebrate positive male role models, embracing emotions and vulnerabilities as part of a healthy masculinity; Movember Participation: Engage in Movember by growing a mustache, raising funds, or participating in Movember-related events to support men’s health causes.

As part of our health focus in November, we have raised awareness of men’s mental and physical health. We also presented the ALEC model – Ask, listen, encourage action, and check in, as caring and being there for your friends can be lifesaving. Additionally, we raise awareness of Prostate Cancer to spread this important subject among our colleagues.
