Dealex delivers Zoomlion cranes to Ukraine

0

Dealex Transport, representing Ukraine in the Project Logistics Alliance, has seamlessly completed the delivery of three heavy cranes from China to Ukraine.

The cranes, manufactured by the renowned Chinese producer Zoomlion, posed a logistical challenge due to their substantial dimensions and weight.

The measurements of the delivered cranes varied from 12000 x 2500 x 3700 mm to 15000 x 3000 x 3900 mm, with weights ranging between 35,000 kgs and 55,000 kgs. Loading operations were conducted efficiently in Tianjin and Shanghai, marking the commencement of their journey to Europe.

One of the most challenging aspects of this shipment was dealing with the size of the cranes. Pilot services were indispensably employed throughout the entire route to facilitate necessary modifications and ensure a smooth transit process.

Dealex Transport utilised low-bed trailers equipped with 4.5 and 6 axles to transport the cranes, ensuring secure and stable transportation. Furthermore, tarpaulin covers were provided upon the client’s special request to safeguard the cargo during transit. At the Port of Constanța, innovative techniques such as traverse beams with soft slings were employed to lift the cranes through the outriggers and wheels.

This successful project adds to the extensive portfolio of shipments undertaken by Dealex Transport, which includes the transportation of approximately 30 cranes from China to Ukraine. The company is known for its regular and efficient delivery services of heavy machinery, utilising breakbulk vessels and flat-racks for transportation from China to Ukraine. The H&H division at Dealex Transport stands prepared to continue providing reliable and suitable solutions for their esteemed clientele.

Khimji Ramdas Shipping export rig to Philippines

Comments Off on Khimji Ramdas Shipping export rig to Philippines

Khimji Ramdas Shipping, our members from Oman, recently executed the multimodal shipment of a 1500 HP geothermal rig and its accessories.

The shipment consisted of a total of 144 pieces and a total volume of 7,000 cbm. 85 trailer-loads of varying sizes and shapes were utilised for transport.

Khimji Ramdas Shipping took charge of all operations in Oman, including:Marine warranty surveyor arrangements; Route survey for the OD cargoes; Packing list preparations; Segregation & labelling; Customs clearance; Port handling; Cargo sorting; Loading; Haulage.

The geothermal rig was crated and packed to be seaworthy by Khimji Ramdas’ professional packing partner team, who were relocated to Oman for this specific project over twenty-five days.

“Marine warranty surveyors were appointed and observed the creation of the rig packing list & packaging process.”
The shipment was executed with a plan to move 85 truck loads from Nizwa and Muscat to a storage yard in the area of Sohar Port. This was to counter the shortage of storage space in the shipper’s yard.

In execution of the haulage, the team had to negotiate a number of challenges, with the major one being preparation of customs documentation and the packing list.

The geothermal rig was also refurbished in Oman with cargoes featuring multiple countries of origin. Customs declarations were required to be made separately for the Oman and non-Oman made cargoes.

Khimji Ramdas’ customs documentation team worked with the shipper and identified each cargoes’ origin to solve this challenge successfully.

Due to the fully-assembled condition of the rig, it required dismantling and proposed another challenge as this was not a known fact to the shipper.

Khimji Ramdas employed the services of a professional surveyor to measure the dimensions & weight of each piece to overcome this challenge.

Jumbo attends TU Delft Offshore Technology Company day

Comments Off on Jumbo attends TU Delft Offshore Technology Company day

On 22nd February, Jumbo participated in a company day hosted by the student association Dispuut Offshore Technology (DOT) from the Delft University of Technology Civil Engineering faculty’s Offshore & Dredging Engineering MSc.

The event was held in the faculty’s old library in the city of Delft and attended by Jumbo together with Seaway 7, Subsea 7 and transition piece (TP) manufacturer Smulders. The four companies are well known to one another, having jointly contributed to a number of renewable energy projects, most recently the Dogger Bank offshore wind farm.

In recent months, Jumbo has been participating in a growing number of student-related events in a bid to develop its connections with educations establishments and learners. The initiative is the work of Bas Milatz and Martijn Witvoet, two recent TU Delft graduates working at Jumbo for the past year.

“During our own studies, we saw first hand the benefits of building bridges between the academic and industrial worlds,” says Bas. “When we arrived at Jumbo we saw there were opportunities to develop this theme. The company, with its open and innovative culture, was very encouraging and we have already started to see broader engagement with students as a result.”

During the company day, the Jumbo colleagues delivered a presentation on the company’s operations in the maritime and offshore energy sectors and hosted a stand where students could drop by for a discussion and more information.

The students were also invited to take part in a Jumbo case study, designing a vessel suited to the installation of the next generation of offshore wind farms in the North Sea, and developing a schedule of work for a forthcoming project.

“The results of the case study were impressive,” states Martijn. “The students showed real problem solving skills and innovative, out-of-the-box thinking. The exercise provided us with an opportunity to discuss our shared vision for the maritime energy transition.

“We feel it is very positive to have regular one-to-one contact with the next generation of engineers. These students and graduates represent the future of our industry. As recent graduates ourselves, we are very keen to showcase the potential for a rewarding career at Jumbo – a company offering independence, fun, opportunities for development and the chance to make a real difference to a sustainable future.”

Following the event, a representative of TU Delft said, “At a recent DOT event, I had the pleasure of tackling a real-world engineering challenge alongside other enthusiastic students. The opportunity to freely develop concepts and gain insights from company representatives was invaluable. Witnessing how Jumbo approaches current problems offered a realistic insight into the industry. Overall, the event was not only enjoyable but very educational as well and enhanced my appreciation for the complexities the engineers at Jumbo face.”

Rhenus launches new sustainable warehouse

Comments Off on Rhenus launches new sustainable warehouse

A major new, sustainable warehousing development, known as the ‘Rhenus Campus’, was officially opened in a launch ceremony on Thursday 18th April, by third-party logistics (3PL) provider Rhenus Warehousing Solutions UK.

The campus reaches high levels of sustainability by being certified “BREEAM Outstanding” and is setting new standards for environmental protection, helping Rhenus Warehousing Solutions UK to put sustainability at the forefront of its operations.

Rhenus Warehousing Solutions UK, which won the 2023 UKWA Award for Excellence in Sustainability, and Baytree are committed to bringing forward pioneering environmental and social advancements associated with logistics buildings, and to be creating new benchmarks in the sector.

The ‘Rhenus Campus’ is home to two warehouses, measuring a total of one million square feet across 64 acres. The first warehouse is 210,000 square feet, whereas the second warehouse totals 771,000 square feet.

Significant reductions in whole life carbon are being achieved, such as the CLT timber floors being 64 per cent lower embodied carbon than a standard floor. Three air source heat pumps, enough to heat and ventilate the campus’ offices and provide frost protection for the warehouses, and 80 electric car charging points have been installed.

Renewable energy is being generated on-site via 2,288 415-watt solar panels, which give a total system size of over 949 kWp (kilowatt peak). The system will feed an estimated 870,000 kWh per annum into the campus – the equivalent power consumption of approximately 250 homes for a year. During the launch ceremony, the solar panels were switched on by UKWA Member Benefits Manager, Tracey Starkey.

Ronny Sassen, CEO of Rhenus Warehousing Solutions, said: “The ‘Rhenus Campus’ is one of the best examples of sustainable warehousing, and forms an important part of our global commitment to positively impacting the environment. Energy efficiency is being improved throughout and biodiversity initiatives are being implemented wherever possible.”

The site features extensive green spaces, homes for local wildlife, and between 700 and 900 native trees. Employees can utilise on-site allotments, sports pitches, a walking/cycling trail and outdoor gym.

Rhenus is also running a Community Outreach Programme, in which it has partnered with Nuneaton Borough Ladies and Girls FC, Attleborough Sports JFC, the Nuneaton branch of the British Gurkha Veterans Association and Dare2Dream Foundation, allowing them to use the company’s facilities.

Mammoet joins ESTA workgroup

Comments Off on Mammoet joins ESTA workgroup

Mammoet has supported ESTA to establish new stability guidelines for Self-Propelled Modular Trailers (SPMTs) when transporting large and heavy loads.

Leading the project at Mammoet is Ludo Mous, Director of Operations for Europe. With over 30 years of industry experience, Mous has seen the market change and is passionate about enhancing SPMT training and safety.

Mous said: “In the past there were rules of thumb which, for the time, were practical and acceptable to use. However, these days, with transport becoming more complex and reaching greater limits, the calculations for stability must be correct. By creating awareness of these guidelines, we hope to prevent operations being performed with dangerous and critical transports.”

Mammoet was part of ESTA’s first SPMT working group, established in 2016, which created its original Best Practice Guide for SPMT operation. A second, larger workgroup was later formed to review the existing guide and expand on it.

In October 2023, ESTA published new trailer stability guidelines, which will be referenced in the first upcoming revision of the DNV ST-N001 Maritime Operations Standard, published by assurance and risk management experts DNV.

“The core principle of the guidelines is a calculated approach,” explains Mous. “Past guidance was based on a measured stability method. This new method is calculating stability taking into account dynamic factors like braking, acceleration, wind, road camber, and so on.”

To establish the guidelines, testing was carried out by Mammoet on SPMTs at its quayside yard in Schiedam, the Netherlands. It covered aspects such as acceleration, breaking, tilting and emergency stops.

Currently, the group is reviewing a learning outcome that will be used to establish the minimum training requirements for an SPMT operator, further enhancing user knowledge and safety.

EFW and MRO Japan sign MOU

Comments Off on EFW and MRO Japan sign MOU

Elbe Flugzeugwerke GmbH (EFW), Centre of Excellence for Airbus Passenger-to-Freighter (P2F) conversions, and MRO Japan (MJP), a leading player in Japan’s aerospace maintenance repair & overhaul market, today announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to collaborate in passenger-to-freighter (P2F) conversions.

Under the MOU, MJP will act as a subcontractor for EFW in P2F conversions and provide third party conversion services for the latter’s Airbus A320P2F/A321P2F programmes. With this collaboration, MJP will become Japan’s first conversion site for the new-generation Airbus narrowbody P2F aircraft.

Takashi Takahashi, CEO, MJP, said, “We are very excited about the P2F collaboration and are committed to achieving success together with EFW. We look forward to establishing a long-term strategic cooperation between the two companies for Airbus P2F conversions.”

Japan’s freighter and logistics market size is estimated by industry researchers to expand at a CAGR of 4.2% between 2024-2029, with air freight being the fastest growing market by mode of transport[1]. Compared to road freight, air freight using P2F aircraft provides a more efficient and environmental friendly way of transporting goods. The success of Airbus P2F aircraft which are now flying reliably and efficiently for operators including Yamato Holdings, one of Japan’s largest delivery service companies, reflects an increasing demand for freighters in Japan.

“We look forward to welcoming MJP into our global family of P2F conversion sites. The success of the A321P2F aircraft for our customer FUYO and end customer Yamato Holdings, shows how the narrowbody Airbus P2F platform is a perfect fit for the cargo transportation needs in Japan and the region,” said Jordi Boto, CEO of EFW. “Partnerships with experienced and well-backed solution providers such as MJP will provide the necessary strategic support as we expand our conversion capacity to capture opportunities in the growing Japanese air cargo market.”

EFW’s Airbus A320P2F/A321P2F programmes are developed in collaboration with ST Engineering and Airbus, with EFW holding the Supplemental Type Certificate and leading in the overall programme as well as marketing & sales efforts. To meet the demand for Airbus converted freighters, ST Engineering and EFW set up a network of facilities across Asia Pacific, Europe and the U.S. to carry out conversions for their Airbus P2F programmes, which comprise the A330P2F, A320P2F and A321P2F platforms.
