KIBA project successfully completes

0

After three years of intensive research and development, the KIBA project – which stands for Artificial Intelligence and Discrete Loading Optimization Models for Enhanced Utilization in Combined Transport – has been successfully completed.

Led by Kombiverkehr KG and supported by Deutsche Umschlaggesellschaft Schiene-Straße (DUSS), Goethe University Frankfurt am Main, INFORM, KombiConsult, Technical University of Darmstadt, and VTG, the project developed a demonstrator for a network capacity management and train loading optimization system. The project was funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital Transformation and Government Modernisation (formerly Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport).

The goal of KIBA was to use artificial intelligence (AI) and mathematical optimization to enhance efficiency, safety, and sustainability in rail freight transport. Supported by a central master data system, methods for network optimization and train loading planning were developed and visualized through a web-based interface for practical user insights.

“With KIBA, we have demonstrated how AI can make rail freight transport more efficient. The developed prototypes help maximize train capacity, use resources more effectively, and make combined transport more attractive. This represents an important step toward shifting freight from road to rail – and thus toward climate protection,” said Heiko Krebs, Managing Director of Kombiverkehr KG

The developed models for train loading planning ensure that trains are utilized to their full capacity in terms of weight and length while reducing crane movements and reloading processes. Numerous variables are automatically and simultaneously considered in the optimization. The network planning component combines AI-based volume forecasts with mathematical optimization to distribute load units in a way that achieves optimal train utilization and ensures fast transport times with minimal transshipments.

“The combination of AI and optimization opens entirely new opportunities for combined transport. Forecasts of booking volumes for load units can be directly integrated into optimization processes, allowing for efficient train loading and more stable network control. This creates a practical approach that directly supports operational systems and enhances the performance of rail freight,” explained Dr. Rafael Velásquez, Director Optimization & Integration at INFORM.

KIBA not only marks a technological milestone for combined transport but also exemplifies successful collaboration between academia and industry. “The close cooperation between Kombiverkehr, INFORM, DUSS, KombiConsult, and the two universities was the decisive success factor. Only by combining these diverse areas of expertise could such an innovative outcome be achieved,” said Krebs. “As a company that itself emerged from academic research more than 55 years ago, building bridges between universities and industry is deeply important to us. Especially in the field of AI, we see a strong need to maintain this link to stay competitive internationally,” added Dr. Eva Savelsberg, Senior Vice President and Member of the Executive Board at INFORM.

With the completion of the project, a solid foundation has been laid for further practical testing and integration of the developed solutions into existing systems. Next steps toward productive deployment include ensuring high-quality data, automating information exchange, and conducting live tests within operational systems. The prototype developed in KIBA is now being prepared for early use by terminal operators and rail freight service providers.

DEME has taken delivery of its new wind turbine installation vessel Norse Wind at the CIMC Raffles Shipyard.

Designed to install the next generation of offshore wind turbines, the vessel combines advanced technology and sustainable design features to offer unrivalled installation capability.

Marking another important milestone in DEME’s continued expansion of its offshore installation fleet, Norse Wind reinforces the company’s strong position in the global offshore energy market. Built by CIMC Raffles and designed by GustoMSC, Norse Wind is equipped to install turbines with rotor diameters of more than 300 meters and XXL monopiles weighing up to 3,000 tons. Its 3,200-ton crane enables operation in water depths of up to 70 meters, setting a new standard in lifting capacity, speed and efficiency.

The construction of Norse Wind was initiated in 2023 by Havfram, the Norwegian offshore wind contractor acquired by DEME in April this year. The vessel was completed on schedule with an excellent quality and safety record. Norse Wind is already contracted for several major offshore wind projects and has a strong pipeline through 2030, underlining DEME’s leading role in constructing the world’s largest wind farms. The vessel is set to commence operations in the first half of 2026, starting with recently secured offshore wind projects in Europe.

“Norse Wind represents an important step in strengthening DEME’s position as a leading player in offshore wind installation,” said Even Larsen, Business Unit Director Global WTG & O&M at DEME. “This state-of-the-art vessel enables us to deliver even larger and more complex projects, further enhancing our capabilities. Sarens lifts beams in Amsterdam

0

At the end of April 2025, Sarens successfully completed a demanding lifting operation along the A9 motorway near Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Commissioned by Romein Beton, this short-term rental project involved the precise handling of 19 large concrete beams, each measuring up to 31,5 metres in length and weighing as much as 60,5 tonnes.

Sarens was selected for this project thanks to its technical expertise, proven experience, and strong relationship with the client. The full scope was delivered in just three days: one day for mobilisation, one for lifting, and one for demobilisation. Despite a tight schedule, the team completed the operation safely and efficiently.

One of the main challenges was managing the permitted outrigger pressures and limited space available for the crane installation. Thanks to careful preparation and expert coordination, these constraints were effectively addressed.

Lifting operations began at 07:00, with all 19 beams successfully placed within the same day. The beams, ranging in weight from 42 to 60,5 tonnes, were lifted at a radius of 31 metres. The entire operation ran according to plan without disruption, supported by a three-person crew working in close coordination.

The lifting equipment performed reliably throughout the project. Representatives from the equipment manufacturer were also present on site to assist with unpicking and installing the beams, ensuring optimal handling during key phases of the operation.

Though brief in duration, this project forms part of the ongoing upgrade to the A9 corridor, which plays a critical role in the regional transport network. Sarens’ contribution highlights its ability to deliver high precision lifting solutions on complex sites and under time constraints. Jaap Zwarthoed, who oversaw the operation, noted: “The team executed each step with professionalism and efficiency. The operation was smooth, safe, and a perfect example of Sarens’ capabilities in high precision lifting under logistical constraints.”

This project once again demonstrates Sarens’ commitment to delivering expertly engineered lifting solutions, on time, on target, and with safety and precision at the forefront.

It confirmed a series of emergency response process by setting crisis-management headquarters upon receiving an incident report, establishing communication channel with the ship management company and conducting a mock press conference at the end of the exercise. During the press conference, journalists asked many questions, creating a tense atmosphere to a real conference.

While growing interest in safety and environmental protection over the world, “K” LINE Group positions the safe operation of vessels as the top priority in fulfilling its social responsibility as a shipping company. Moving forward, it will continue to contribute to society by preparing for unforeseen circumstances through large-scale accident response drills and by ensuring daily safe operations of its vessels.

Total Movements executes movement of Coke Drums

0

Total Movements, a member of the Project Logistics Alliance, successfully executed the Multimodal, Door-to-Door Movement of 2 x 643 MT Coke Drums, totalling over 10,200 FRT, for a key project at one of India’s largest oil refineries.

The scope involved Road Transportation from the supplier’s Factory to the nearest Jetty, rolling on the Drums onto the Barge, Barging to the port closest to the refinery site, inland delivery and placement to the Foundation. The operation required meticulous planning and coordination, given the massive dimensions and weight of the cargo. Key highlights and challenges included: End-to-end multimodal coordination, including marine and inland logistics; Operations carried out during foul weather and heavy monsoon rainfall, demanding strict safety controls; Navigating tide constraints at both ports; Securing Marine Warranty Surveyor (MWS) approvals for the sea voyage; Managing road transportation challenges due to poor infrastructure and ODC movement restrictions.

Despite the odds, the entire movement was executed smoothly and safely, within the committed timelines. Total Movements Team thanks their client for their continued trust, and sincere appreciation to all the stakeholders who contributed to the success of this operation. Congratulations from the Project Logistics Alliance for another flawlessly executed movement.
