Marr reaches milestone on the NLHPP

UK: Marr’s cranes working on construction of the North London Heat and Power Project (NLHPP) have reached a milestone with the successful installation of the modularised chimney stack.

Over a two-month period, one of our #M2480D heavy lift luffing tower cranes progressively lifted multiple stack sections that formed a Flue Gas Stack in excess of 100 metres high and weighing up to 60-tonnes into place—delivering a simpler alternative to the ‘traditional’ approach of using large crawler or mobile cranes.

Marr’s cranes have been operating on NLHPP since 2024 – bringing our innovative approach to cranage solutions for the power generation and WtE/EfW sector to what is one of the UK’s most advanced Energy Recovery Facilities (ERFs).

Located on a relatively compact and already congested site, the key challenge was to develop a cranage solution that would deliver the heavy and high-volume lifting required to construct the project without additional complexity or congestion.

Marr’s solution was to position two M2480Ds within the footprint of the plant. The first crane is erected on Marr’s modular rail system (MTS) inside the plant’s waste refuge bunker, with the ability to travel transversely across the bunker to provide full lifting coverage across both boilers and other critical mechanical components. The second crane is installed on a steel cruciform base atop piled foundations at the other end of the site, providing extensive coverage across the project.

“The M2480D solution provides greater flexibility for the project team by allowing the stack sections to be progressively completed and integrated into the wider construction programme. Avoiding the need to mobilise very large crawler cranes helped to simplify site logistics while at the same time maximising the utilisation of construction laydown areas,” said Steve Ryder, General Manager – International, Marr Contracting.

“By identifying ‘free’ spaces to utilise within the site, we’ve been able to provide a more efficient cranage solution that provides greater coverage and the capacity to lift up to 110 tonnes,” Mr Ryder said.

Another major benefit of the scheme is the ability to free up the outer edges of the project for delivery, off-loading, materials storage and pre-assembly areas − helping to maintain logistical access and traffic flow around the entire site.

“The crane strategy we have developed with our client on this project is also allowing for new methods of construction to be introduced in the UK market,” said Simon Marr, Managing Director of Marr Contracting.

“By working with our clients to really understand their challenges, we are able to collaboratively develop solutions that help solve those issues, often resulting in new and innovative approaches. We developed the MTS to extend the reach and coverage of our cranes over a site and its use on this project is a great example of putting design into practice.”

The lifting operation was safely carried out in accordance with the approved lift plan by trained and competent personnel, with all required lifting and work-at-height controls in place.
