Sarens powers INEOS Project One

0

In a show of massive mobilisation of both human and material resources, Sarens, the global leader and reference in crane rental, heavy lifting, and engineered transport, has been supporting INEOS Project One in Antwerp since July 2023.

This groundbreaking initiative aims to construct a state-of-the-art facility in the port of Antwerp, Belgium, and is set to have a positive impact on both the local and European economies. Sarens is responsible for the transportation and lifting operations for this project, including road and marine transport, modular assembly, and precise installations. Our role also involves planning, coordinating, and executing all transport and heavy lifting activities.

In one of the projects phases, we executed one of Belgium’s largest-ever moves: the load-in and transport of furnace modules exceeding a height of 60 metres and weighing up to 7.700T with our Self-Propelled Modular Trailers (SPMTs). Additionally, part of the project’s scope is for Sarens to manoeuvre a colossal 100-metre-long, 800-tons C3 structure using our new mighty LR 12500-1.0 crane, “Strong Sofie”. The project entails additional aspects in its initial phases such as the transportation of numerous bullets and the involvement in later phases of specialised vessels, including our Louis-type and Tom & Wim barges, to facilitate marine transport of heavy industrial components. The LR 12500-1.0 crane, will be working alongside other iconic cranes from our fleet such as the LR 1750, LR 11000, CC 3800, CC 2800, and CC 2500. A total of 88 cranes will be mobilised during this project and an astounding 400-SPMT axle lines will be set in motion.

In terms of mobilising human resources for the project, Sarens accomplished a remarkable achievement. We successfully recruited or reassigned 300 expert professionals to support this mega-scale project. These efforts have been crucial in securing the necessary workforce to ensure the successful progress of this large and complex project. To address the accommodation challenge for the recruited personnel, Sarens acquired an old hotel in Zandvliet and fully renovate it. With Facility Management in full swing, Sarens managed the renovation, and after months of effort, the hotel was completed at the beginning of 2024, ready for the first employees to move in.

Large-scale projects bring unique challenges, and INEOS Project ONE has been no exception. So far, Sarens has tackled these with innovation and precision. Belgium experienced its wettest year on record in 2024, impacting road conditions and crane mobilisation. Despite weather not permitting, Sarens adjusted schedules and used advanced planning tools to maintain progress. To tackle the regional shortage of skilled operators and bring the project to life, Sarens recruited talent from across Europe, bringing together 300 strong from an astonishing 28 different nationalities. Moreover, we invested in long-term housing options, by acquiring and renovating a hotel as well as renting apartments and bungalows, to ensure the stability and well-being of our workforce. Equipment was sourced from multiple our international hubs, with cranes like the LR 12500-1.0 transported directly from the Liebherr factory in Germany. Last, but certainly not least, a project of this scale has several EPCM contractors with multiple contractors and subcontractors working on a small footprint, which requires coordination with many parties involved that we successfully managed.

To guarantee efficient execution, Sarens implemented several forward-thinking strategies. For instance, advanced systems provided live updates on equipment movement and operational progress. In addition, the expertise of Sarens engineers from South Korea, along with resources from hubs across Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic, enhanced operational precision.

In a project that will not only provide economic benefits but also adhere to high environmental standards, utilising the most advanced technologies to minimise emissions and maximise energy efficiency, INEOS Project One is an important step forward in the sustainable development of the industry. For Sarens, this project underscores our ability to deliver large-scale solutions that shape the future of global industry. With operations continuing into 2025, we remain committed to excellence, ensuring that INEOS Project ONE is not only completed successfully but also stands as a symbol of world-class engineering and partnership.

WALLENIUS SOL supports CleanSea

0

Every hour, the equivalent of more than five bathtubs of plastic wash up along Sweden’s west coast.

Through its collaboration with CleanSea, WALLENIUS SOL aims to actively contribute to cleaning Swedish coastal waters from plastic and debris.

CLEANSEA IS A Swedish initiative founded by twins Lukas and Mikaela Julher. Their mission is to protect marine life and ensure a future for our oceans by removing plastic and waste from Sweden’s coastlines. In addition to shoreline clean-ups, CleanSea also organises surface and diving operations to clear debris from the seabed.

“Many people don’t see the extent of it, because the most public and visible areas are often cleaned by local councils, but the reality is that as much as 700-800 tonnes of plastic wash up on Sweden’s west coast every year. In 25 years, it’s estimated there will be more plastic than fish in the sea, and millions of marine animals die as a result each year,” says Mikaela Julher, founder of CleanSea.

Far out in the northern archipelago of Bohuslän lies the beautiful island group of Trossö–Kalvö–Lindön. This area is home to a rich biodiversity, including rare species such as oyster plant, sea couch grass, and nesting barred warblers. But it is also one of the hundred most vulnerable bays, islands and stretches of coastline in Bohuslän – a place where hundreds of kilos of marine debris wash ashore every year.

“To support CleanSea’s work we’ve chosen to ‘adopt’ Lindön, ensuring they can continue to keep the sea and coastline clean – all year round,” says Rebecca Tagaeus, Chief Sustainability Officer, WALLENIUS SOL.

The team from CleanSea will clean WALLENIUS SOL’s adopted island, Lindön, 3–5 times over the coming year and expects to collect around 100 kg of plastic each time.

100 for the Ocean is one of CleanSea’s largest initiatives to clean Sweden’s coastline. By having 100 different companies each adopt a bay, these exposed areas can be cleaned between one and five times per year, depending on need. With support from WALLENIUS SOL, Lindön will be cleaned 3–5 times a year. CleanSea estimates that around 100 kg of plastic will be collected during each of these clean-ups.

“When we choose which activities or organisations to support, we prioritise initiatives that promote ecological and social sustainability where we live and operate. It’s a pleasure to work with an authentic, small-scale partner like CleanSea, where we can clearly see the tangible results,” says Rebecca Tagaeus.

Huge amounts of plastic reach the Bohuslän coast via ocean currents from the Atlantic and the Baltic Sea. Removing 100 grams of plastic can be enough to save a seabird.”

CleanSea’s goal during 2025 is to remove 30,000 kilos of marine plastic, and to remove even higher amounts in the future. In five years, they have already collected over 84,000 kilos. But plastic is far from the only thing floating in our seas.

“The majority of what washes ashore is single-use plastics, packaging, and fishing gear. But we find all sorts of things – space technology, safes, drugs, underwater drones, and plenty of messages in bottles,” explains Mikaela Julher.

She hopes even more companies will choose to adopt a bay along Sweden’s west coast.

“We truly celebrate each time a company adopts a bay. We need to work together to reach the goal of a clean sea, and when we’re able to keep one specific place consistently free of plastic, it can be life-saving for the animals that live there.”

Mammoet and Bata launch new safety boot

0

Five years after the successful introduction of their joint shoe collection, Mammoet and Bata Industrials are expanding their collaboration with a new model: the Sling.

This innovative safety shoe has been developed for, and tested by, professionals. The shoe combines top-class protection with a striking design and maximum comfort.

With the Sling, Mammoet and Bata once again emphasize their common mission: to supply high-quality safety shoes that meet the toughest requirements of the field. Two globally respected brands: Mammoet, specialist in heavy transport and hoisting; and Bata Industrials, leader in sustainable and innovative safety shoes, join forces to provide optimal support to professionals all over the world.

“The Sling builds on everything we’ve learned over the past five years,” said Paul Gregoire, Merchandise Director at Mammoet. ‘We continuously listen to feedback from our people in the field. The result is a shoe that is lighter, more comfortable and more stylish than ever”.

That is not an empty promise. As with previous models, the Sling has been extensively tested by Mammoet professionals under real working conditions. Every sole, seam and closure was evaluated for performance, durability and safety.

The Sling is not only functional, but also a visual eye-catcher. With the recognizable red and black Mammoet design and fluorescent accents, the boot stands out, without compromising on technical performance.
The sole is based on the proven Bata Enduro PU outsole with Walkline® 3.0 technology, which ensures a natural foot movement and excellent comfort. Thanks to the segment sole, the shoe remains stable, while the improved Tunnel System® provides extra shock absorption, energy return and grip.

The upper, made of wear-resistant microfiber and the BOA® Fit System, make The Sling easily adjustable and suitable for long working days in logistics and light industry.

For Bata Industrials, the Sling is a logical continuation of the existing collaboration with Mammoet.

Emérence van Daalen, Global Marketing & Product Director at Bata Industrials: “This shoe represents the next step in our joint journey. We combine high-quality materials, smart technology and an uncompromising focus on safety and ergonomics. The Sling adapts to the user, not the other way around”.

The Sling will be available in Europe from May 2025. What started as a shoe for Mammoet employees is now available to any professional who has high demands on their footwear and wants to look good in the workplace.

“The Sling is more than a new model,” concludes Gregoire. “It is an example of what is possible when two market leaders continue to innovate together. Together we go to the extreme — one step further with The Sling.’

Polaris delivers for Massawa Airport Project

0

Polaris Projects have successfully executed a series of complex, cross-trade multimodal shipments for the Massawa Airport Project in Eritrea.

The shipments, originating from multiple global locations, were precisely coordinated to ensure timely arrival in Massawa.

One of the major challenges in this project was the transportation of RO/RO units which measured up to 14.0 (L) x 3.80 (W) x 3.60 (H) meters, weighing up to 65 metric tons.

Approximately 35 pieces of special equipment were also delivered with the main cargo.

The limited availability of regular liner sailings to Eritrean ports – particularly for out-of-gauge and heavy cargo – necessitated meticulous planning and execution.

Fortunately, containerised accessories faced fewer shipping restrictions and were handled more easily.

Despite these logistical complexities, Polaris Projects completed the multimodal deliveries efficiently and on-schedule, meeting the high expectations of all stakeholders involved.

“We extend our heartfelt appreciation to all our partners and stakeholders for their unwavering support in bringing this project to a successful conclusion.”

Mammoet relocates beach pavilion

0

Mammoet successfully relocated a beach pavilion on the island of Texel in the Dutch province of North Holland.

This work was necessary following recommendations by local authorities that sands dunes close to the pavilion be allowed to grow.

This, in turn, will ensure that there is sufficient room for the dune to grow in order to be strong enough to counteract erosion and rising sea levels. Mammoet performed this work on behalf of JLD Contracting BV.
It was important that the move was carried out at relatively short notice, so after just weeks of preparation time the whole pavilion was rolled to its new location in just ten minutes. A live audience watched on, via YouTube streaming.

Given the structure’s wooden composition, it was also important to handle it with care.

The minutely adjustable surface provided by the deck of Mammoet’s SPMTs made sure that the building could be carried in one piece without deformation. Needless to say, this was the first time a pavilion had been move in this way, in the Netherlands.

After JLD Contracting B.V. installed piling at the building’s proposed new location that would be long enough to absorb future erosion of the beach, they installed a beam layer perpendicular to that on which the building formerly stood.

A steel platform was constructed beneath the pavilion to guard against bending of the structure, before it was disconnected from gas, water, sewerage and electricity utilities. Paal 17 Aan Zee could then be lifted using the stroke of two SPMT trains.

The SPMTs were then driven under the building and took the full weight of it, allowing the old piling to be cut. The pavilion was then driven forward by Mammoet’s SPMT operator, over the newly installed beams, and lowered.

With the pavilion in its new location, beach goers can once again enjoy a popular place to relax, while protecting the local environment.
