Scheldt Tunnel gets ready for their next journey

After two years of intense construction, the eight gigantic elements of the Scheldt Tunnel are ready for their next journey.

At the construction dock in Zeebrugge, Belgium, Lantis and TM COTU, including DEME, have started flooding the basin with no less than 800,000 m³ of water, the equivalent of 320 Olympic swimming pools.

Once the dock is full, the tunnel elements, each larger than a football field and weighing up to 60,000 tonnes, will disappear beneath the surface, marking a symbolic moment in this impressive construction project.

Soon, these concrete giants will begin their 100+ km journey towards Antwerp, where they will be immersed to form the Scheldt Tunnel, a key link in the completion of the Antwerp Ring. The first element is scheduled to begin its 30-hour journey in May.

Fortune International begins shipments for the Fenix project

Fortune International, our members in Italy, have took on a 245 MW solar project (the Fenix project in Sicily), which will become the largest solar plant in the country.

“When it comes into operation, the plant will generate approximately 400 gigawatt hours per year!”

The sites for the solar plant have been carefully selected, and will be built on land of scarce agriculture value and high desertification risks.

Two transformers weighing 140 tons each have been delivered up to their designated site.

Thorough archaeological surveillance was conducted to ensure no archeological relevant locations are affected.

Nookala takes on Country Manager role at ABL Norway

Rhenus grows its service in Northern Spain

The global logistics provider Rhenus announces the opening of a new hub in Burgos dedicated to its B2B courier services, operated by its subsidiary Langarri Logistica, member of the Rhenus Group since 2019.

“K” LINE holds compliance liaison meeting

Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (“K” LINE) organized the eighth meeting of the Fair Competition Promotion Committee (a compliance liaison meeting) at Iino Building on March 7.

The goal of liaison meetings is to energize the “K” LINE Group’s compliance activities and share information. For this recent Liaison Meeting, 24 compliance personnel from 15 Group companies based in Japan gathered to actively exchange views on the latest trends and initiatives.

In the Liaison Meeting, a guest speaker from PwC Risk Advisory LLC was invited. They lectured on trends in corporate misconduct, misconduct risk management and data analysis, and demonstrated an analytic system.

The Liaison Meeting also included presentations on the compliance measures of individual companies and a question-and-answer session to further share information about these companies’ initiatives. The participants shared advice regarding compliance measures at different companies each other.

In response to the recent growth of public interest in compliance, the “K” LINE Group has established a compliance structure by collaborating with its Group companies. By fulfilling the demands of society and maintaining the stakeholders’ trust the Group aims for both its sustainable growth and increase of its corporate value.

Kalmar expands its global delivery capability

Kalmar has begun production of its electric empty container handler and heavy forklift truck at the company’s Shanghai manufacturing facility.

The production launch will be marked by a themed event, “Lift to New Heights,” which will be held in Shanghai on 10 April, with customers and dealer representatives participating.

Kalmar’s Shanghai plant, which opened in 2005, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. The plant manufactures a broad range of high-quality material handling equipment, including reachstackers, forklift trucks, empty container handlers, and terminal tractors. Located at the southeastern tip of Shanghai near one of the world’s busiest ports, the facility serves customers in the Asia-Pacific, South America, India, Middle East and Africa regions.

The Kalmar electric empty container handler, capable of lifting up to 10 tonnes, enhances the decarbonisation of cargo-handling operations without compromising on productivity or safety. ICOMIA appoints ABL at superyacht refit yard

The International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA) appointed energy and marine consultancy ABL to develop an updated risk assessment standard aimed specifically at superyacht refit yards.

The new standard is based on the current JH143 standard for shipyard risk assessment.

ABL will draw upon knowledge from its expert JH143 and yacht specialist surveyors from different locations around the world, to ensure that the new standard will be fit for purpose, valuable to the industry and user-friendly for the surveyors.

The JH143 Shipyard risk assessment process was originally developed by ABL to assess risks at a shipyard, allowing underwriters to consider their exposure and to mitigate risks where possible.

“A superyacht refit shipyard is quite a different environment to a commercial yard and the risks are different. For example, overspray in a commercial yard may not be catastrophic, but overspray landing on a superyacht can result in a claim in the multiple millions.” Adam Jackson, ABL’s Head of Yacht Services and Director of Marine Engineering for the UK.

CEVA strengthens pharmaceutical logistics offer

CEVA Logistics is strengthening its pharmaceutical logistics offer with the construction of a new warehouse in the Strasbourg-Entzheim Airport Business Park.

The new 17,000 m² facility will offer transport and logistics value-added services for the domestic and international healthcare market starting in early 2026.

CEVA Logistics announced the start of the construction on the new logistics center in Entzheim (67) which will manage tailor-made pharmaceutical operations. Strategically located in the heart of the Strasbourg Airport Business Park, the facility will benefit from close to airport facilities, cargo players, airlines, as well as customs and police services, thus offering a complete, integrated logistics solution coupled with a high level of security for customers in the pharmaceutical sector.

Planned to accommodate large volumes of healthcare products, the platform, with its height of more than 17 meters, its quays equipped to receive active air containers, will have state-of-the-art inventory management and traceability systems. In addition, it will benefit from the latest innovations in automation, ensuring smooth and secure management of activities.

Modern and designed to maximize the efficiency and responsiveness of warehousing and logistics operations, the site will offer 3 controlled temperature zones (+15°C to +25°C/+2°C to +8°/-25°C), ensuring the best storage conditions for medical products.

In line with CEVA’s strong commitment to improving the sustainability performance of its sites and local communities, the logistics center will be built to meet BREEAM[1] certifications in the “Very Good” and “Biodiversity” categories as well as featuring rooftop solar installations for renewable energy. The facility will also meet international certification standards such as TAPA FSR B, TSR 2 and ISO 13485, criteria of excellence for cargo safety and security.

With this new location in Entzheim, CEVA is further strengthening its presence in the Alsace region of France with five logistics sites, three of which are temperature-controlled. The new facility will be CEVA’s second in Entzheim, with existing facilities located in Sausheim, Mulhouse, and a site in Strasbourg that was a result of the acquisition of the pharmaceutical activities of Stef Logistique Santé in 2024. With this future hub, CEVA will have 70,000 m² of space in the region, including 32,000 m² dedicated to the healthcare sector.

TII SCHEUERLE works in collaboration with Spedition Kubler

In close collaboration with Spedition Kübler, TII SCHEUERLE has developed a side girder deck that, by means of specially designed couplings, has been specifically made for the transportation of transformers.

Thanks to its low dead weight, the STB 320 can achieve axle loads of twelve tonnes with a payload of 320 tonnes when using the largest combination. This reduces approval time and effort for the heavy-load logistics provider as complex and expensive bridge recalculations and inspections are no longer necessary with such low axle loads. As a result, this makes the new SCHEUERLE side girder deck a milestone in heavy transport and a key tool for the energy transition process.

Heavy-duty transport is essential for the energy transition sector and securing the supply of electricity. It is an indispensable means of transportation; for example, when forwarding transformers which are the core elements of the electricity infrastructure. But Germany’s dilapidated roads and bridges pose major challenges for heavy-load logistics specialists such as Spedition Kübler from Michelfeld-Erlin. Due to the high unit weights of the loads, previous modular transport combinations achieve axle loads of significantly more than 14 tonnes – too much for bridges that are normally only allowed to be driven on with an axle load of twelve tonnes. The costs for approval procedures are high and transport can become enormously expensive and delays occur due to detours and additional bridge recalculations.

Working closely together, Spedition Kübler and TII Group subsidiary, TII SCHEUERLE, the industry expert for heavy-duty on and off-road heavy transportation, have developed an ultra-lightweight side girder deck which includes new axle modules for the transport of transformers with the aim of significantly reducing axle loads. While Kübler contributed its extensive practical experience to ensure that the side girder deck and axle lines meet current and future challenges, the experts at TII SCHEUERLE used innovative manufacturing techniques and new materials to significantly reduce the weight of the STB 320. It weighs around 50 tonnes less than before thus reducing the axle load by more than two tonnes. With a payload of 320 tonnes and axle loads of less than twelve tonnes, it has set new standards in the industry.

Focus on transformer transport plus innovative design pave the way to low dead weight
In contrast to conventional solutions, which are often designed for a wide range of applications using universally applicable but therefore heavy equipment, the new SCHEUERLE side girder deck is specially designed for the transport of transformers as well as for maximum load capacity with minimum weight. The configuration of the modular platform vehicle allows, for example, all axle combinations from 9+9 through to 22+22 whereby 18+18 axles plus, the load is positioned above the axle lines. In addition, TII SCHEUERLE has been able to weight-optimised bridge structures through the use of innovative technologies and new materials. A key feature is the newly developed, particularly compact slewing ring and a load distribution frame integrated into the chassis of the central bogie unit. This eliminates the need for additional, heavy load distribution frames. Self-supporting transformers can be suspended directly into the bridge up to a support length of 12.5 metres which corresponds to a combination configuration of 15+15 axle lines. Thanks to the large stroke of the side girder deck, it is also possible to extend the combination with additional axle lines in order to further reduce axle loads. This results in a previously unattained ratio of dead weight to payload.

Kübler and TII SCHEUERLE are also breaking new ground in terms of operating concepts and occupational safety. The new damping system for the lateral support of the lifting lever contributes to this, as does the use of an electronic braking system (EBS) and the increased stability due to a larger track width. “These measures result in optimal working equipment that TII SCHEUERLE has tailored precisely to our requirements,” explained Felix Mangold, Technical Director of Spedition Kübler. Companies in the energy sector have also recognised the need for such transport solutions for the energy transition. Electricity grid operator, TransnetBW, is monitoring the use of the innovative transport solution as part of a study and has also secured preferential access to the new vehicle.

At the end of March, the heavy-load logistics professionals from Spedition Kübler, together with the industry experts from TII SCHEUERLE and in the presence of Heinz Rößler, Managing Director of Spedition Kübler, and Susanne Rettenmaier, Associate Partner of the TII Group, gave a live demonstration to the transport company’s customers as part of a workshop. During the event, they also highlighted the importance of heavy-load transportation for the energy transition sector and explained the improved operating conditions provided by the innovative SCHEUERLE side girder deck, the challenges posed by the condition of the road infrastructure along with the requirements of a freight forwarder for the related transport solutions.

Mammoet breaks record in Alberta

Mammoet successfully transported two Ethylene Oxide (EO) reactors from Dacro Industries to Shell Scotford in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland, north of Fort Saskatchewan over the first two months of 2025.

These reactors, integral to the production of downstream petroleum products, each weigh 670 tonnes, with a diameter of approximately 8.4 meters (28 feet) and a length of only 23 meters (76 feet). The unusually short length of the reactors relative to their weight required innovative problem-solving from Mammoet’s engineering team and resulted in a unique and record-breaking situation where the total vehicle weight needed for transport was nearly double the weight of the cargo.

While the EO reactors were not as heavy as the previous Alberta record holder for cargo weight—the 800-tonne splitter vessel moved for the IPPL Heartland project in 2019 —the equipment required to move them made them the heaviest loads ever transported on Alberta highways, at 1.76 million kilograms of total gross vehicle weight. The transport operation utilized two pull trucks and six push trucks to maneuver the specially designed frame for the reactors onto the trailers, creating a transport train length just over 140 meters (462 feet).

“The primary challenge in moving vessels of this weight is in spreading out the load per axle on our trailers” says Curtis Barnett, Senior Operations Director at Mammoet Canada Western. “Typically vessels like this are longer, but these are shorter than average and particularly heavy. That’s why we had to have the frame engineered to balance out the weight of each vessel across the two trailers.

Mammoet’s engineering team had the frame fabricated using four P55 beams from a Mammoet gantry system, with custom-fabricated ends to securely accommodate the two reactors. The frame was then mounted on large turntables on each of the two 26-line double-wide intercombi trailers, in order to facilitate the 90-degree turn required to enter the destination site. The innovative approach and meticulous planning ensured the safe and efficient delivery of the reactors to site, setting a new benchmark for heavy haulage in Alberta.
