Fioravanti SRL, member to the Worldwide Project Consortium (WWPC) for Italy, arranged for the movement of a heavy transformer from Agrate Briganza, Italy to Leverkusen, Germany.

The task included also the positioning of the 55 tons unit with dimensions of 3.95 x 3.8 x 4 m at the most important chemical site at destination.

A spokesperson for the company explained: “The positioning operations for this unit have been very challenging, because of the limited access to the site and operating room space did not allow for lifting by mobile cranes. Instead we’ve been forced to position the transformer through the skidding technique combining the use of hydraulic jacks, support beams and sliding ways.

After our special truck arrival, we started lifting the transformer off the special truck with hydraulic jacks, got the required height aligned to the foundation and positioned the beams, stools and steel plates. Then we extended the beams to the foundation with stools and steel plates, hence skidded the transformer with jack and rollers. By that way the transformer got to the final position and we lifted it to remove rollers and lowering onto foundation in the transformer’s station. After that, the chemical site’s workers were able to rebuild the brick wall of the room, which had been torn down to let in the transformer.

A complex project like that required precision, teamwork and patience from all people involved, considering that the positioning operations took two days.”
